Calculator Interface
For this UX challenge, I was tasked with creating a calculator interface. I wasn’t sure whether to design a literal calculator or a financial tool that includes a calculator feature, so I decided on the latter. Using Quicken as inspiration, I designed a financial website with an integrated calculator. This project proved to be one of the most difficult yet rewarding challenges I’ve faced so far. The ambiguity forced me to think critically about user expectations and potential solutions.
Drawing from Quicken’s brand, I incorporated its signature purple color (#6236FF) while addressing a major pain point: its existing calculator interface felt dull and uninspired. To improve upon this, I added more vibrant colors and design elements to make the interface more engaging and easier to use. Ultimately, I enjoyed the creative freedom and variety this challenge provided, showcasing my ability to adapt to unclear requirements while improving user experience.

Transforming Numbers into Actionable Insights
I reimagined Quicken’s calculator interface to make financial data more intuitive and actionable. Instead of a static calculator, I designed an interactive tool that translates user-inputted numbers into dynamic charts, helping users visualize their progress toward financial goals. By breaking calculations into clear categories, I ensured users could easily grasp their expenses, savings, and overall financial health. This approach shifts the experience from raw number-crunching to an insightful financial planning tool, empowering users to make informed decisions. The result? A more engaging, visually driven interface that simplifies complex financial data into meaningful insights.
"Given our current economic conditions, it's more important than ever to have a clear understanding of your financial situation and to plan accordingly."

Redefining Financial Clarity Through Visualization
As Quicken empowers users to take control of their finances, transforming raw data into digestible insights is key. Through a thoughtful redesign, I identified two essential areas for enhancement:
-
Interactive Data Representation
-
Traditional calculators provide numbers, but dynamic charts and visual breakdowns offer deeper clarity. By integrating interactive elements, users can easily track their financial progress and make informed decisions.
-
-
Engaging and Intuitive Interface
-
A visually driven, user-friendly design ensures that financial planning feels accessible rather than overwhelming. Enhancing the interface fosters a more engaging experience, encouraging users to take proactive steps toward their goals.

Turning Numbers into Visual Narratives
Numbers alone don’t tell a story—visuals do. Financial planning can feel overwhelming when faced with raw data, so I redesigned Quicken’s calculator interface to transform numbers into clear, visual insights. Instead of a static calculator, users interact with dynamic charts that evolve as they input their financial details. This approach helps them visualize progress, track expenses, and make informed decisions at a glance. By integrating color-coded breakdowns, the interface highlights key financial categories, ensuring clarity without extra effort. The result? A simplified, engaging experience that shifts financial planning from tedious calculations to an intuitive, goal-driven process.

Designing for Clarity and Confidence
Financial tools should empower, not intimidate. A cluttered interface can make decision-making stressful, so I focused on creating a streamlined, structured layout that simplifies complex data. By incorporating intuitive navigation and clear data hierarchies, users can quickly find the insights they need. Interactive tooltips provide on-demand explanations, ensuring users never feel lost in the numbers. To further enhance usability, I introduced color-coded financial categories, allowing users to instantly recognize trends and spending patterns. Every detail was crafted to make financial management feel less like a chore and more like a proactive step toward success.
Making Financial Planning Engaging
Finance isn’t just about numbers—it’s about goals, aspirations, and real-life progress. I designed Quicken’s new interface to feel interactive and engaging, ensuring users stay motivated on their financial journey. Progress tracking visualshelp users see how their efforts are paying off, reinforcing positive financial habits. By integrating responsive design elements, the experience adapts seamlessly across devices, making financial planning accessible anytime, anywhere. Micro-interactions provide subtle feedback, making the experience feel dynamic and rewarding. The goal? To turn financial tracking into an engaging, motivating, and user-friendly experience that people actually enjoy using.
Enhancing User Engagement Through Data Visualization
Financial data can often be complex and intimidating, leading to disengagement among users. To address this, I redesigned Quicken's calculator interface to incorporate intuitive data visualization techniques, transforming raw numbers into easily understandable visual formats. Research indicates that data visualization simplifies the presentation of complex financial information, enabling users to spot trends, assess risks, and engage in strategic planning more effectively. By integrating interactive charts and real-time feedback, the tool ensures that users not only input data but also gain meaningful insights from it. Color-coded financial categories highlight key areas of spending and saving, allowing for quick comprehension and actionable decision-making. The interface also incorporates progress tracking elements, reinforcing positive financial habits and encouraging continued engagement. These enhancements align with industry trends, as studies show that visual financial tools improve user retention and decision-making efficiency.
Optimizing the Digital Experience for Financial Confidence
A well-designed financial tool should do more than just compute numbers—it should instill confidence in users' financial decisions. The original Quicken calculator relied on traditional numerical outputs, which could be overwhelming for users unfamiliar with financial planning concepts. By introducing dynamic UI elements, contextual guidance, and simplified navigation, I made it easier for users to interpret their financial data and take informed actions. Strategic use of typography, contrast, and layout ensures that critical insights stand out without unnecessary visual clutter. Additionally, I implemented responsive design principles, ensuring that the interface remains seamless and accessibleacross various devices, from desktops to mobile phones. This accessibility is crucial, as studies show that mobile-friendly financial tools see higher user engagement and retention rates. By prioritizing clarity, engagement, and ease of use, this redesign helps users feel empowered rather than overwhelmed when managing their financial future.
